"August 6th. I usually forget it myself, I don't think I've celebrated a birthday since I was a kid." She knew Americans liked to make big deals about the day they were born, but it didn't seem like that big of a deal back home. Maybe if she was lucky her parents might buy something expensive like watermelon or beef to give her, but other then that it was just like any other day for her.

My mom would always go buy something that was difficult to obtain back in those days in Japan like beef or fruit. Japan is a very small country with many people, yes? That means there isn't much room to grow or produce livestock."
